Website performance: what actually matters to your visitors
A practical introduction to loading speed, responsiveness and visual stability.
Loading is only one part of speed
A page can appear quickly yet feel slow when someone interacts with it. Consider the main content loading, the response to clicks and whether the layout moves unexpectedly.
Keep the main content easy to load
Use appropriately sized images, avoid unnecessary third-party scripts and make the main page content available in the initial HTML. Reserve space for visual elements before they arrive.
Test real journeys
Check the navigation, contact form and key pages on a phone as well as a desktop. A fast homepage alone does not make the whole experience usable.
Measure before making promises
Lab tests help identify issues, while real visitor measurements reflect varied devices and networks. Treat performance scores as diagnostic evidence, and repeat checks after meaningful changes.
